Many mums-to-be can feel like their bump is taking over – the bigger it gets, the more it can feel like you’re disappearing! You might also find that day-to-day activities are getting increasingly uncomfortable and tiring. Our advice is to try and take time out to relax and look after yourself – we’ve given a few suggestions here to start you off. And don’t forget – we’re here to give you any advice you need – just get in touch.
Jacky, baby care advisor and mum
When you get pregnant, it’s normal for everyone and everything to focus on your bump, which is lovely most of the time. But in later stages of pregnancy, you may find yourself feeling a bit invisible and longing to be appreciated as an individual.
As your bump gets bigger, getting a good night's sleep can be a nightmare! And being tired just makes you feel even more grouchy and sorry for yourself. So give yourself a break, indulge in some me-time and ask friends and loved ones to help out around the house, while you put your feet up!
If you do feel a bit overlooked, mention it to your partner and close friends and family, to help them understand how you’re feeling. Then try and take some time out to treat yourself to things that make you feel good, for instance:
Try to remember the positive side of your bump. It’s not every day that men offer you their seat, women smile admiringly and you get to put your feet up and eat ice-cream/marmalade/marmite (delete as applicable!) until it’s coming out of your ears. Remember how excited and happy you were earlier on in the pregnancy. And think about how amazing it’ll be to hold your baby in your arms for the first time.
Chatting things over with other mums-to-be who know exactly how you’re feeling can be great therapy. If you don’t know anyone who’s going through pregnancy, places like our online forums are ideal.
